Pierre Loti (pseudonimo de Julien Viaud) fue un auténtico bestseller en su época. Fue un escritor «casi sin querer», un escritor como si no le importara la gloria. Marino de profesión, oficial de la Marina francesa y encarnación perfecta del escritor romántico, sus novelas –Aziyadé, El casamiento de Loti, Novela de un spahi...– ambientadas en los países exóticos que visitaba, enamoraron al público y crearon incluso modas, como saludarse en tahitiano o regalarse guirnaldas de flores los enamorados. En este Diario íntimo, que combina encantadoramente pensamientos y correspondencia, disfrutamos de los años en que Loti empezaba a escribir, siendo aún un marino con amores en cada puerto, y abocado siempre a su modo desgarrado y melancólico de vivir estas aventuras...Muy admirado por Raymond Roussel, le provocó un gran enfado cuando, al ser nombrado Loti miembro de la Academia Francesa, no se dignó responder una carta de felicitación.

El 13 de junio de 1900 se perpetra en Pekín una matanza de cristianos (chinos y foráneos), unos días más tarde asesinan al embajador de Alemania y atacan a las cancillerías extranjeras de Pekín que permanecerán sitiadas, sin comunicación con el exterior. Desde hace un par de años los bóxers se han sublevado contra los extranjeros residentes en China. Poco tiempo después una flota de las potencias aliadas zarpa para auxiliar a la emperatriz Tseu-Hi y defender sus intereses, tanto personales como materiales, pero cuando arriba a puerto la emperatriz ha huido y las cancillerías están ya liberadas. Pierre Loti, embarcado en un acorazado francés, viaja en esta flota. Aunque llegará una vez sofocada la rebelión no por ello dejará de informar de la situación mientras constata que China es un país maltratado por el mundo occidental y que una cruel represión ha respondido a las no menos crueles agresiones de los bóxers.
