Bei Hofmannsthal überwiegt die Hingabe an die Schönheit des Todes, die in der Unmöglichkeit der dialektischen Einheit, in dem Mangel an Geborgenheit in der Realität und nicht zuletzt in der inneren Disharmonie und den latenten Konflikten ihren Ursprung hat. Maeterlinck setzt die Akzente anders. Er betont in erster Linie das Geheimnis und die Absurdität des Todes sowie das Unvermögen und die Unfähigkeit des Menschen, das von Tode involvierte Geheimnis aufzudecken und zu begreifen.
