Franz Marc - Last Works Franz Marc's famous Sketchbook from the Field contains thirty-six-small-format pencil drawings that were produced between March and June 1915 - just a few months before the artist's death in March 1916. These precious sheets, which are among the last works produced by Marc, are his artistic legacy. In spite of their miniature scale, the sketches are among the greatest creations of drawing in the twentieth century. They mark the beginning of an age, and yet their Promethean energy points to the future. Delicately lyrical elements in them are linked with a deep constructivist spirit that does not only reflect the avant-garde of the new century, but even today, one hundred years later, has not lost any of its startling modernity. On the occasion of the centenary of the artist's death we will publish a new edition with illustrations of facsimile quality that are comparable to the first facsimile produced in 1956. The book has been out of print for years, as are later editions, none of which even approached the quality of images in the first edition.

Franz Marc widmete sich zeitlebens der Darstellung des Pferdes in der bildenden Kunst wie kein anderer Künstler. Als Maler und Mitbegründer des 'Blauen Reiters' schuf er visionär-symbolische Bilder, die heute zu den Ikonen der Moderne zählen. Diese Sonderausgabe bietet einen Überblick über seine Gemälde, Zeichnungen, Gouachen und berühmte Postkarten, beginnend mit Naturstudien um 1905/06 und endend mit Skizzen, die Marc kurz vor seinem Tod an der Front anfertigte. Im Laufe dieser Dekade gewinnt das Pferdethema an Bedeutung, insbesondere nachdem Marc 1909/10 von München in die Abgeschiedenheit von Sindelsdorf übersiedelte. In seinem Streben nach der 'Animalisierung der Kunst' wird das Pferd durch genaue Beobachtung und intuitives Verstehen zum Ausdrucksträger einer besseren, reineren Welt. Form und Farbe entwickeln sich zu ungewohnter Einfachheit und Kraft. Die monumentalen Tiervisionen der Jahre 1910 bis 1913 münden in Marcs Suche nach vollkommenen Ausdrucksformen in den abstrakten Kompositionen des Jahres 1914. Franz Marc, geboren 1880 in München, studierte ab 1900 an der Münchner Akademie und entdeckte auf Reisen nach Paris den Impressionismus und Vincent van Goghs Kunst. 1910 knüpfte er Kontakte zu August Macke und gründete 1911 mit Wassily Kandinsky den 'Blauen Reiter'.
