This book is the first extensive selection of the letters of Johannes Brahms ever to appear in English. The letters in this volume range from 1848 to just before his death in 1897.
The book presents a collection of 14 songs by Brahms, inspired by German folk-poems from George Friedrich Daumer's Polydora, along with a conclusion set to Goethe's poem "Zum Schluss." Composed between 1869 and 1874, it includes solo voice numbers interspersed with four-voiced settings. The first complete performance occurred in 1875, with a notable orchestration of No. 9 by Ernst Rudorff. This edition features a new orchestration by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr., while retaining Brahms' original orchestration for the early version of No. 9.
