My lidé se rádi vidíme jako něco lepšího než zvířata, fakt ale je, že jsme stále součástí přírody. První část knihy, „Temná strana přírody", ukazuje, že ačkoliv život a jeho prostředí spěje k vyváženosti, řádu, stavu „tak akorát“, zlo se v něm přesto vyskytuje. Je nevyhnutelné a vzniká tehdy, kdy dojde ke: ztrátě místa (když je něco přemístěno tam, kam nepatří, třeba králíci do Austrálie).
