    • Exploring the role of the bard, Philip Brady emphasizes the importance of poetry as a voice for authentic expression rather than mere academic exercise. Through twenty essays, he shares experiences from diverse settings, from Ohio's rust belts to Irish pubs and Zairian classrooms, highlighting the transformative power of poetry in everyday life. Brady's reflections celebrate the challenges faced by non-traditional students, turning their skepticism into opportunities for deeper understanding and connection to poetry, illustrating its ability to resonate across cultures and experiences.

    • After spending time with Herb Score and Sandy Koufax, Heraclitus and the Queen of Sheba, the reader is escorted home again, breathless from Brady's singular, expansive talents for narrative and song. This book is a journey through glittering empires of the imagination. --David Citino. Brady takes us on a bitter pilgrimage to his past and the past of places where he has lived, a wary traveler who knows how hard it is to tell heartbreak from the absurd. He can say, as Marianne Moore did, I am troubled, I'm dissatisfied. I'm Irish."--Elton Glaser.

Although G nter Grass's novel Der Butt was one of his most important and best-known works, it has not received the critical acclaim enjoyed by his other novels. These seven essays address the complexity of Der Butt's criss-crossing themes and nebulous narrator, who, throughout the story, fluctuates between a bizarre past and the present. Based on a series of discussions that explore the key issues and techniques of Der Butt, the essays present individual perspectives on Grass's artistry and provide new insight into the meaning of the heart of the novel: the interplay of history and sexual warfare.

    • In this volume an international team of scholars assesses the significance of 'Prenzlauer Berg', a remarkable 'alternative culture' which took its name from the run-down area of East Berlin with which it became synonymous. As well as offering a critical overview of this culture, the books presents detailed studies of the work of two major poets with whom it is particularly associated, Elke Erb and Bert Papenfuß-Gorek, and also considers the significance of 'boundary' as one of Prenzlauer Berg's central defining metaphors. There are substantial contributions by three East Germans with significant personal experience of Prenzlauer Berg both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
