      A Rational Approach to Tunnelling

      • 438 páginas
      • 16 horas de lectura

Focusing on both practical applications and theoretical foundations, this book delves into the fundamentals of rock mechanics. It caters to students and professionals alike, aiming to deepen their understanding of key principles and methods, while encouraging further development in the field. The emphasis is placed on mechanical approaches over complex empirical statements, and the concise text is supported by an extensive list of citations, making it a valuable resource for learning and reference.

Tunnelling is not an art the exclusive domain of the few but the application of a sophisticated technology that can be mastered just like any other engineering discipline. But as tunnelling continues to boom, the ood of innovations is not always re ected in university teaching. This school is designed to help those newly qualified or employed in the field to stay ahead, by providing access to the latest thinking and processes from a rare collection of the worlds leading authorities. In the 2nd Summerschool Rational Tunnelling , an international group of select specialists addressed with lectures intending to illuminate various aspects of tunnelling. The present volume contains the notes of these lectures. Aspects are: - Safety in tunnelling - Engineering decisions based on hazard assessment - Blasting methods in tunnelling - Injection for waterproofing and ground improvement in underground construction - Exploration by core drilling - Tunnel support ahead of the face with pipe roofs or forepoling - New approaches in tunnelling with composite canopies installation-design-monitoring - Lighting of road tunnels in Austria - Rock reinforcing " Tunnelling with soil freezing - The start of hydroshields risk assessment under high water pressure - Geotechnical risks for tunnel drives with shield machines - Earthquake resistant design of tunnels

    • Fractals in geotechnical engineering

Self-similarity is a striking and ubiquitous characteristic of structures in geology. On the other hand, capturing of scale effects is one of the main challenges in geotechnical engineering. There, the usual approach is to extrapo-late laboratory findings toward large scale problems. Whereas this procedure is passable for small grained soils, it proves unrealistic for coarse grained soils and rock, especially jointed one. As a consequence, the prediction of e. g. water inrush into a large tunnel based on the examination of rock samples and spot-wise packer tests proves to be hardly possible. The new branch of fractal analysis encompasses both notions, self-similarity and scale effects. Therefore, it pricks up the geotechnical engineer's ears and evokes the hope that it can help to treat the related problems. A more thorough view, however, shows that the exploitation of fractal analysis in the above sense is not so straightforward. First of all, our limited range of observance over several scales inhibits to check and quantify the scale effect. At that, we lack the mathematical tools to treat problems that exhibit a continuous scale dependence, as this is the case with fractal materials.

    • Tunnelling has evolved from an empirical art to a scientifically grounded engineering discipline, enabling methods to be explained, verified, and taught effectively. The Summerschool "Rational Tunnelling" brought together an international group of specialists to share insights with an audience from 14 nations. This volume compiles notes from their lectures, covering various tunnelling aspects, including principles for lining design, constitutive models for numerical simulations, and insights into soft-ground tunnel design through monitoring and modelling. It addresses challenges faced by TBMs in water-bearing ground, methods for estimating groundwater inflow in hard rock tunnels, and performance monitoring for design verification. Additional topics include instrumentation for construction control, integrated seismic imaging for geological prediction, common tunnelling pitfalls, and the application of design-build contracts. The book also discusses cost and schedule management in major projects, referencing the Vereina and Gotthard base tunnels, as well as technical features for quality procedures, hard rock TBM advance rates, tunnel refurbishment, and fire protection measures.

    • Geomechanics is the mechanics of geomaterials, i. e. soils and rocks, and deals with fascinating problems such as settlements, stability of excavations, tunnels and offshore platforms, landslides, earthquakes and liquefaction. This edited book presents recent mathematical and computational tools and models to describe and simulate such problems in Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. It includes a collection of contributions emanating from the three Euroconferences GeoMath („Mathematical Methods in Geomechanics“) that were held between 2000 and 2002 in Innsbruck/Austria and Horto/Greece.

The present boom of underground constructions as a means of improving traffic connections and quality of life implies the transformation of tunneling from an empirical art towards a rational engineering science. Mechanics, being a vanguard of engineering science, is also a main ingredient of rational tunneling. A rational assessment of rock properties, action of support, environmental impact of excavation are unthinkable without a proper mechanical analysis. The rational approach is a particular quest of young engineers who enter the profession of tunnelling but do not have the experience claimed by a limited number of specialists. Thus, a Eurosummerschool of Tunneling Mechanics is in accordance with the aim of the European Commission towards an improved human potential. The vivid interest of the many participants confirmed this quest. Of course, the mechanics of tunnelling is an envolving discipline and, thus, wide off the mark. However, the contributions in this book are to be considered as some step towards this aim.

    • Constitutive modelling of granular materials

      • 554 páginas
      • 20 horas de lectura

In view of its extreme complexity the mathematical description of the mechanical behaviour of granular materials is an extremely difficult task. Today many different models compete with each other. However, the complexity of the models hinders their comparison, and the potential users are confused and, often, disencouraged. This book is expected to serve as a milestone in the present situation, to evaluate the present methodes, to clear up the situation, to focus and encourage for further research activities.
