Die vorliegende Publikation, Teil der Sammlungskataloge des Münzkabinetts im Kunsthistorischen Museum Wien, behandelt in zwei Bänden die Gold-, Silber- und Bronzemedaillen, die während der Regierungszeit von Kaiser Ferdinand I. (1835–1848) geprägt wurden. Diese Medaillen wurden am Hauptmünzamt in Wien hergestellt, dem zentralen Ort der Münz- und Medaillenprägung im Habsburgerreich. Die detaillierten Abläufe – von der Konzeption über die Skizzen bis zur Ausprägung und Verteilung – werden erstmals umfassend beleuchtet. Band I widmet sich der Biografie des Herrschers, seinem Öffentlichkeitsbild und den Medaillengattungen, während Band II als umfangreicher Katalog die individuellen Produktionsprozesse rekonstruiert.
