Rural landscapes and agricultural policies in Europe
    • The final results and reflections of the MEA-Scope project highlight its pioneering role in assessing multifunctional agriculture within the framework of European policy. Funded under the Scientific Support to Policies initiative of the 6th Research Framework Programme, this project aimed to provide insights for policy-makers, whose decisions can significantly impact millions of lives over time. Informed decision-making is essential, and scientific research plays a crucial role in guiding these choices. MEA-Scope was one of two projects focusing on research priorities for European rural areas identified during a 2001 EC workshop on Multifunctionality in Agriculture. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between policy discussions and research, identifying strategic topics for mid-term research programs. At the time of its launch, the concept of Multifunctionality in Agriculture presented numerous open research questions. The project emphasized the need for both positivistic approaches addressing technological aspects of agriculture, forestry, and land use, as well as normative research concerning trade, food quality, safety, animal welfare, environmental issues, rural development, and cultural considerations.
