Bisherige Forschungen haben gezeigt, dass literarische Illustrationen sowohl die Leseerfahrung widerspiegeln als auch als Produkte einer vermarktungsfördernden künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung mit einem Text zu verstehen sind. Eine umfassende Untersuchung der Illustrationen in Ausgaben von literarischen Bestsellern, wie Daniel Defoes Robinson Crusoe oder James Thomsons The Seasons, die über die Grenzen des Ursprungslandes hinaus verbreitet wurden, steht jedoch noch aus. In dieser Studie werden sowohl internationale Bestseller in illustrierten Übersetzungen für ein deutschsprachiges Publikum als auch deutsche Werke betrachtet, die sich an Illustrationsmoden in England und Frankreich orientieren. Besonders im Kontext der Anglophilie wird den deutschen Illustrationen für die Übersetzungen englischer Werke Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Zudem werden Illustrationen für pastorale, naturbeschreibende, komische und religiöse Dichtungen sowie für Kinderliteratur untersucht. Illustrierte englische, deutsche und französische Prachtausgaben werden ebenfalls vorgestellt und in die transnationale Betrachtung der Buchillustration einbezogen.
