Der 1943 in London geborene Stephen Willats ist ein Pionier der Konzeptkunst, der seit den 1960er-Jahren ein vielfältiges Werk geschaffen hat. Das Buch begleitet eine Ausstellung im Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zürich und konzentriert sich auf zwei Schwerpunkte in Willatsʼ Schaffen: seine Beschäftigung mit der Kybernetik, also der Regelung und Steuerung dynamischer Systeme, die dem Künstler sowohl als Methode, ästhetisches Vokabular und formales Modell zugleich dient, sowie Willatsʼ ureigenem Interesse an Subkulturen, die Nonkonformismus und Selbstbestimmung propagieren. Die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven der Ausstellung finden im Buch zusammen und erlauben durch einen umfangreichen Bildteil einen neuen Blick auf Willatsʼ künstlerisches Schaffen. Vertiefte Analysen von Heike Munder, Bronaċ Ferran, Andrew Wilson und John Kelsey erklären das Spannungsfeld zwischen Kybernetik, Architektur und Subkultur, das sich immer wieder um Fragestellungen normativer, regulierender Machtstrukturen dreht und zugleich stets nach möglichen Freiräumen und alternativen Denkmodellen fragt.

This publication is the ?rst retrospective and comprehensive compilation of works and writings by British artist Stephen Willats. The ?rst section contains numerous illustrations of works by Willats, including a number not previously published, and text contributions from authors who have been closely involved with the artist for many years. The second section collects important writings by Stephen Willats from his archive, which have been transcribed for the ?rst time and now presented in combination with black-and-white illustrations. This section opens up new and until now unpublished insights into the text works of the artist.
