The geophysical literature includes numerous elementary textbooks that address geomagnetism alongside other subjects like gravimetry and seismology. While some texts focus solely on sub-disciplines of geomagnetism, most maintain a high level of physical and mathematical rigor. These sub-disciplines—main field theory, palaeomagnetism, rock magnetism, magnetic induction, and magnetic anomalies—are typically grounded in potential theory, Maxwell's equations, or solid-state physics. However, few authors supplement their theoretical work with practical examples. The authors of this volume aim to bridge this gap in applied geomagnetics, specifically in interpreting geomagnetic anomalies. With 30 years of experience in the field, they share insights into the realities of anomaly interpretation by presenting various case histories from around the globe, including anomalies related to basic and acid intrusions, ore deposits, and thermal anomalies. A significant challenge in interpreting geomagnetic anomalies is determining the direction and intensity of magnetization in deep-seated layers. Considerable effort has been made to extract this information through correlations between ground-based, airborne, and satellite magnetic measurements. Although the issue remains complex, some general constraints on the magnetic properties of different crustal types can be established.
