A Linguistic Study of American Punctuation is the first full-length treatment of American punctuation that is descriptive rather than prescriptive. The book has two to detail the relationship between punctuation and linguistic structure (syntax, prosody, semantics, and pragmatics) and to describe how this relationship affected the practice of punctuation in a collection of written texts taken from the Brown University Corpus of American English.
