Ergebnisse der stadtkernarchäologischen Untersuchungen im Randbereich der hochmittelalterlichen Stadt Hassfurt am Main

Más información sobre el libro

In 1991, excavations at the Schulplatz on the northern edge of the medieval town of Haßfurt revealed post structures and enclosures from a rural settlement dating back to the 13th century. This developing town held strategic importance as a ford across the river Main and served as the easternmost stronghold of the bishops of Würzburg, with remnants of the city wall and ditch found during the excavations. By the 14th century, the area saw increased development, featuring both timber-framed and stone buildings. Excavations from the 15th and 16th centuries uncovered a wealth of pottery and small finds linked to timber-framed houses likely inhabited by teachers and students of a Latin school. Significant archaeological evidence from the 17th and 18th centuries indicates continued occupation, with well-preserved house foundations associated with the school established in 1609, remaining in use until the mid-19th century. The catalogue documents the archaeological findings, detailing pottery, glass, and other small artifacts, organized by type for thorough examination.
