Diffractive optics is widely recognized as an important growth area and enabling technology in modern optics. The control of optical fields by microstructured media, which is the essence of diffractive optics, surely opens up a large number of new avenues in optical research. Only a small fraction of the potential of diffractive optics has been employed up to date. Already-established or highly promising technological applications have been selected for this book in order to act as incentives for further industrial activity. Without heavy mathematics, the book explains what diffractive optics is and what it can do: In the first chapter, the fundamental principles of diffractive optics are explained in some detail, as well as the appropriate design and fabrication schemes. The chapters that follow each concentrate on a particular subject in the field of diffractive optics - they can be read in any order and can be fully understood by a reader who has gone through the basic first chapter.
