Special Topic Indoor and Built Environment 1999, Vol. 8, No. 3 Carbon monoxide is the most ancient of poisons and one which, largely unnoticed, is still with us today. In spite of the fact that we know a lot about its dangers carbon monoxide remains the most common accidental toxicant in domestic and occupational environments. Dangers still persist where fuel is burnt and regulations on safety are imperative. At last changes are taking place. In Korea for instance, a country with possibly the worst record for domestic poisoning, government-led changes in fuel type are having an effect. Other countries are working through education, the collection of statistics and regulation to reduce the level of poisonings. This theme issue deals with both domestic and occupational exposure as well as the treatment of poisoning. It will be a valuable source for departments of health and those responsible for safety regulations, health care professionals along with manufacturers of heating equipment.
