DS serves as a forum for Ph.D. students in economics from various European universities to present their theses, work, or research problems. While these workshops facilitate discussions on economic issues, the organizers aim for a broader objective. Europe is currently undergoing a dual transition: Central and Eastern European countries are either returning to market-based economies or introducing them for the first time, impacting all aspects of social life. This shift is part of a larger trend toward European unification, involving significant changes in commodities, services, cultures, and knowledge across the continent. Addressing contemporary challenges requires the participation of all citizens, necessitating a reevaluation of entrenched opinions and biases. The successful establishment of a new Europe hinges on coordinated efforts from its populace. DS aims to encourage students from different countries to collaborate scientifically, starting with an introduction to their respective situations and issues. This fosters understanding of diverse approaches to problem-solving, with the hope that collective solutions will emerge over time. The inaugural EDS workshop in September 2001 in Budapest showcased promising results, with participants from Germany, Hungary, and Albania engaging in insightful discussions. Thanks are due to the students for their contributions, as well as to the organizers and DAAD for their support.
