These proceedings contain the refereed full technical papers presented at the 26th Annual European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2004), hosted by the School of Computing and Technology at the University of Sunderland. ECIR, the annual conference of the British Computer Society’s specialist group in Information Retrieval, originated as the annual Colloquium on Information Retrieval Research in the UK until 1998, when it moved to Grenoble, France. Since then, the conference has alternated between the UK and Continental Europe, evolving into a major European forum for Information Retrieval research. To reflect this transformation, the event was renamed the European Conference on Information Retrieval. In 2004, ECIR received 88 full paper submissions from Europe and beyond, including North America, China, and Australia, highlighting its growing popularity and reputation. Of these, 28 papers were accepted for presentation, with each paper reviewed by at least three reviewers. Notably, 11 of the accepted papers featured a student as the primary author, demonstrating the enduring commitment to fostering student involvement that characterized the original colloquium.
