Anonyme griechische Porträts des 4. Jhs. v. Chr.

Die Arbeit erfaßt und untersucht als eine Auswahl 47 Typen unbenannter, rundplastischer, bärtiger Männerbildnisse ohne Helm aus dem Zeitraum von ca. 410 - 275 v. Chr. Die ca. 130 Einzelstücke sind, von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, als römische Kopfkopien überliefert. Die Chronologie basiert überlieferungsbedingt auf stilkritischen Aspekten. Für die erste Hälfte des 4. Jhs. lassen sich zwei Traditionsstränge nachweisen, die nach 350 ineinander aufgehen. Die Typologie wird anhand von Frisuren, Barttrachten, Physiognomie und Mimik erarbeitet. Hauptbezugspunkte für die Untersuchung der motivgeschichtlichen Entwicklung sind die Köpfe auf zeitgenössischen, vor allem attischen Grabreliefs. Der Vergleich zwischen Porträt- und Sepulkralkunst zeigt, daß sich erstere durch ein weitaus vielfältigeres Motivspektrum auszeichnet und entgegen der überwiegenden Meinung nur bedingt der zeitüblichen Bürgerikonographie folgt. Darüber hinaus wird im 4. Jh. eine ganze Reihe von Porträts geschaffen, deren Kopfschemata eine enorme Nachwirkung entfalten, die sich bis weit in den späten Hellenismus hinein erstreckt. This study aims at collecting and analysing a sample of 47 types of anonymous three-dimensional bearded male portraits without helmet dating to the period from ca. 410 B. C. to 275 B. C. The some 130 pieces survive - apart from only a few exceptions - as Roman copies of heads. Due to restricted survival the chronology is based on stylistic aspects. For the 1st half of the 4th century two tradition strands are attested, which became merged after 350 B. C. The typology is based on hair styles, beard styles, physiognomy, and facial expressions. The main points of reference for the investigation of the development of motif history are heads of contemporary, mainly Attic funeral reliefs. A comparison between portrait art and funeral art makes quite clear that portraits show a far wider variety of motifs and - in contrast to common opinion - follow the contemporary iconography of citizens only to a certain degree. Additionally, quite a number of portraits were created in the 4th century the head schemes of which showed an enormous after-effect which reached far into the Late Hellenistic period.
