Legal translation and the dictionary

Más información sobre el libro

This study focuses on three key issues foundational to creating a bilingual law dictionary: language and terminology in the Czech and Anglo-American legal systems, the legal translation process, and the lexicographic method for dictionary production. Terminology is highlighted as a crucial aspect of legal language, encompassing specialized vocabulary and legal jargon. Conceptual analysis is necessary when an exact term in the target language is absent or uncertain. Legal translation should rely on comparative legal, linguistic, and genre analysis to ensure the accurate transfer of legal information. The primary goal is to provide the target audience with clear, comprehensive, and precise legal information in their language, supplemented by context to enhance understanding within a different legal environment and culture. A dictionary designed to aid users in drafting legal texts must be built on thorough comparative legal and linguistic analysis, which will (a) identify equivalents in vocabulary, syntax, and genre, (b) choose relevant lexicographic material for inclusion, and (c) create user-friendly entries.
