Plant protection increasingly relies on sustainable management and consumer expectations for food quality and reliability. This involves high-quality plant protection products, reliable equipment, and skilled operators. Equipment must accurately dose and distribute products while functioning effectively, necessitating regular inspections to identify and rectify technical defects. Regularly inspected sprayers are crucial for ensuring sufficient pest and disease control with minimal product use, reducing environmental contamination risks, and ensuring operator safety. Member States are focusing on ensuring the reliable operation of plant protection equipment through sprayer inspections. A European standard for these inspections was published in early 2003 to guide EU practices. A recent three-day workshop aimed to familiarize experts from Member States with this standard, share experiences on existing inspections, and establish a consistent approach based on EN 13790. Approximately 80 experts from 20 Member States and candidate countries attended, alongside representatives from the European Commission, who discussed future regulations for plant protection equipment. The workshop featured presentations, an exhibition of test facilities, and visits to approved inspection workshops.
