Más información sobre el libro

"This is 'Gelehrtengeschichte' in the best sense of the word." (Scholia Reviews 18/2009) Otto Kern (1863-1942), a classical historian recognized for his work as an epigrapher, historian of religion, and biographer, reflects on the formative experiences of his youth. He recounts his humanistic education under his father's guidance in Stettin and Berlin, his studies in ancient languages and classical archaeology with notable scholars such as Ernst Curtius, Carl Robert, Hermann Diels, and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff in Berlin and Göttingen, and his memorable experiences during the excavations at Magnesia on the Maeander led by Carl Humanns. Although intended for publication, this manuscript was only shared in a few typescript copies with selected friends after Kern’s death. Now, over sixty years later, it is made accessible to a broader audience, accompanied by an introduction to Kern’s life and personality, explanatory notes, additional written and pictorial material, and a comprehensive index of names. This work not only preserves Kern's reflections but also enriches the reader's understanding of his contributions to classical studies.
