The concept of sustainability is crucial for developing architecture that addresses future challenges. Sustainable architecture requires a value-preserving, resource-friendly approach to materials and construction, applicable to both urban structures and design execution. To honor this commitment, the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine and Jana Revedin established the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2007, recognizing architects who excel in sustainability. This book documents the achievements of the 2007 and 2008 award winners. The first section introduces each architect's work and philosophy, while the second section provides an in-depth exploration of two or three projects that exemplify their unique approaches. The 2007 prizewinners include Stefan Behnisch from Germany, Balkrishna Doshi from India, Françoise-Hélène Jourda from France, Hermann Kaufmann from Austria, and Wang Shu from China. The 2008 honorees are Fabrizio Carola from Italy/Mali, Philippe Samyn from Belgium, Carin Smuts from South Africa, Andrew Freear and his Rural Studio from the USA, and Alejandro Aravena for Elemental from Chile. This documentation highlights the innovative contributions of these architects to sustainable design and construction practices.
