As the global economic crisis impacts financial, political, and social landscapes, its effects on international migration are becoming evident. This recession, considered the worst since the Great Depression, is altering the dynamics of migration, with potential consequences if the economy deteriorates further. Governments, businesses, and individuals are grappling with the fallout, leading to a loss of confidence in established institutions. In Europe and North America, the crisis is prompting policymakers to reconsider their views on labor migration amid strong public demand to protect domestic jobs, while also confronting mid-term demographic challenges. These conflicting pressures necessitate strategies that address the immediate economic turmoil and ensure long-term regional prosperity. This book represents the Transatlantic Council on Migration's efforts to analyze how significant demographic changes will influence global migration patterns and how governments can formulate immigration policies in a talent-driven world. This volume is the second major output from the Council, which was established in 2008 as part of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) initiative in Washington, DC, with the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the European Policy Centre as policy partners.
