The First Future Internet Symposium took place from September 28–30, 2008, in Vienna, Austria, serving as a platform for leading researchers and practitioners to discuss the scientific and technical challenges in designing a new Internet. Attendees expressed excitement about the potential developments and recognized the symposium's role in fostering a collaborative community. With over a billion users, the Internet stands as one of humanity's most successful creations, deeply embedded in daily life, regardless of direct interaction. Approaching its fifth decade, the Internet has demonstrated impressive resilience and adaptability amidst growing user numbers, data volumes, and evolving usage patterns. However, it now faces significant challenges in meeting the demands of our knowledge society. Major global initiatives are underway to enhance scientific research, invest in physical infrastructure, improve education, and optimize Internet utilization, with substantial investments from Japan, the USA, and Europe. The EU is aligning its Seventh Framework research programs around the Future Internet concept. In March 2008, EU commissioners, national ministers, industry leaders, and researchers convened in Slovenia to outline a vision for a future Internet that addresses Europe’s needs for the next decade and beyond, emphasizing the necessity of a robust scientific research agenda to support these goals.
