Global environmental challenges such as deforestation, desertification, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, inadequate waste management, water pollution, and climate change, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, have heightened the need for participatory academic discourse on their causes, impacts, and effective mitigation strategies. In response, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus (BTU), Germany, hosted a four-day Alumni conference at the University of Buea, Cameroon, from December 8-11, 2008, focusing on “risk assessment and management for environmental protection.” This book is a product of that conference, featuring contributions from multidisciplinary participants from both developed and developing nations. It explores significant environmental issues and threats facing Sub-Saharan Africa and offers various perspectives on addressing these challenges through risk assessment and management tools, environmental management systems, environmental law, and other practical mechanisms. The concepts discussed can be adapted for application in other global regions. This unique resource on environmental sustainability will be invaluable for policymakers, environmental managers, researchers, educators, students, and the general public.
