Reorganising the system of science had been a central task for Kant and the Idealists. Schelling’s ›Lectures on the method of academic studies‹ from 1802/03 stand out as a discourse based on the academic reality of his time, which discusses all disciplines taught at the universities and shows how his own notion of ‘science’ can bridge the gap between philosophy and academic practice. The result is a programmatic notion of science both practicable and revolutionary. In a variety of international articles, the present volume discusses Schelling’s ›Lectures‹ from the point of view of both philosophy and history of science and shows that his ideas remain thought-provoking even in a contemporary context of university debates.
