Homogeneous catalysts based on transition metals are crucial for industrial applications, particularly for initiating catalytic reactions with light. This thesis investigates the electronic and steric effects of the olefin ligand on the spectroscopic properties, stability, and reactivity of bistriphenylphosphine-cinnamate and related group 10 complexes. The findings enabled direct predictions of reactivity based on NMR-spectroscopic behavior. Consequently, a specific design of photo-switchable complexes was achieved, allowing for the olefin ligand to be cleaved from the metal through selective light-induced intra-ligand cyclization. This ring closure was analyzed both for the ligand itself and within the complexes, focusing on electronic and steric influences. The research highlights the potential of tailored complexes for advancing light-activated catalytic processes, emphasizing the importance of understanding ligand interactions in the development of efficient catalysts.
