Since 2001, the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) has organized biennial symposia to showcase research enabled by the resources of the NIC and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC). In June 2013, the JUQUEEN supercomputer at JSC, featuring nearly half a million processors, achieved the title of “No. 1 in Europe” on the “TOP 500” list. However, the JSC's true accomplishment lies not only in its rankings but in its ability to facilitate high-quality research across various fields, including astrophysics, computational biology, chemistry, particle physics, materials science, and more. Key to maintaining this standard is the user-friendly support from JSC staff, who provide quick access to resources and targeted training. Many computational codes, often complex and developed over decades, require adaptation for massively parallel architectures. The JSC staff’s training helps in this process. However, some scientific problems conflict with parallel execution, making the JSC's dual hardware strategy essential. The JUROPA system, with its cluster architecture, serves as a general-purpose supercomputer, meeting the needs of approximately 90% of the hundreds of research projects conducted at JSC in the two years since the last symposium.
