Before the storm

Author Marion Donhoff, editor and publisher of Germany's leading newspaper Die Zeit, is known as an outspoken voice of reason and common sense in a country torn by self-doubt, confused pride, and guilty reproach about its past. She is also one of the surviving members of a great and noble family that lived on a celebrated estate in East Prussia, lost to Russia and the Red Army in 1945.
