The ongoing rapid urbanization in China prompts the exploration of alternative options, highlighting the biography and contributions of Zhang Jian (1895-1926), a notable official-scholar and reformer. His work in Nantong, Yangtze River Delta, has garnered significant historical attention. This study aims to fill a research gap by examining Zhang Jian's role as a pioneer of modern urban greening in China. It investigates whether urban greening reflects a transfer of planning concepts from industrialized societies to China, suggesting that the rich green heritage of Chinese cities may have been overlooked during urban modernization.
