The problem of responsibility in moral philosophy has been a vibrant topic of debate, particularly since Harry Frankfurt's influential paper, 'Alternate possibilities and moral responsibility' (1969). The main participants in this discourse are compatibilists, or 'soft' determinists, and incompatibilists, including libertarians and 'hard' determinists. This discussion has roots in Antiquity, where compatibilists, notably the Stoics, engaged with incompatibilists like Epicurus, Alexander of Aphrodisias, and Plutarch. Despite the evolution of terms and concepts over centuries, the core issues remain similar, focusing on the idea of 'what is up to us'—or 'what depends on us.' This volume presents twenty contributions that explore the problem of moral responsibility as it relates to this ancient concept, using the Greek phrase to eph' hêmin and its Latin equivalents, nostra potestate and in nobis. The aim is to enhance classical scholarship while illuminating contemporary discussions. Contributions come from a range of scholars, including Marcelo D. Boeri, Mauro Bonazzi, and Susanne Bobzien, among others, each offering insights that bridge ancient thought and modern philosophical inquiry.
