The first European Congress of Mathematics took place in Paris from July 6 to July 10, 1992, at the Sorbonne and Pantheon-Sorbonne universities, aiming to symbolize the development of the European community. Over 1,300 attendees participated, engaging in a twofold purpose. The scientific aspect featured forty-nine invited lectures showcasing the state of the art in various branches of pure and applied mathematics, alongside poster sessions for participants to present their work. Additionally, twenty-four specialized meetings were organized before and after the Congress. The more original facet included sixteen round tables focused on examining the interactions of mathematics with other sciences, society, education, European policy, and industry. This approach successfully broadened the reach of mathematics, highlighted by a mini-festival of mathematical films and two exhibits. A Junior Mathematical Congress was also held concurrently, gathering two hundred high school students to inspire the next generation. Overall, the Congress fostered collaboration and dialogue among mathematicians and the wider community, emphasizing the relevance of mathematics in diverse fields.
