Montserrat is often associated with the terrible volcanic eruption which has disrupted life on the island since 1997. However this event masks the reality that this Caribbean island, with its vast and diverse terrain, is a spectacular land with a stunning array of tree species. From the hillside forests, bound north and south by drier zones, to its many showcase gardens, Montserrat is the isle of trees. In this first edition we have focused on a sampling of species observed, many of which are commonly seen around the Caribbean. This compendium delves into the history, peculiarities and on occasion the reverie which these trees have inspired, while still remaining faithful to botanical knowledge. The authors explore the meanders of their destinies intermingled with those of the intrepid souls who discovered, loved and studied them over time. Written both in English and French, this book is representative of the predominant role of these two languages in the culture of the Lesser Antilles and their constant interaction since the New World was discovered.
