One in seven people globally are individuals with disabilities, with at least 80% living in developing countries and constituting a significant portion of the poorest communities. Previous global initiatives to alleviate poverty, such as the Millennium Development Goals, largely overlooked this demographic. The Sustainable Development Goals present an opportunity for disability-inclusive development (DID), yet many believe such interventions are financially impractical, especially in low-income nations. This publication disputes that notion, drawing from a comprehensive 2014 review by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. It explores how international cooperation in education, health, and employment fosters inclusive societies by upholding the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring their full participation. The exclusion of individuals with disabilities in essential areas perpetuates poverty and incurs economic costs for them and society. Conversely, investing in inclusion yields significant long-term economic benefits for individuals, families, and communities. It also highlights the legal and policy frameworks that compel governments to support DID initiatives. Furthermore, it provides examples of how investments in critical sectors have created opportunities for individuals with disabilities and the broader society.
