The authors employ quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, conducting extensive surveys and interviews across 679 schools, 67 counties, and 13 provinces in China. They also perform longitudinal case studies in five municipalities and provinces to capture diverse educational reforms. Utilizing national statistical data from the 1970s to 2013, along with first-hand documents from various educational departments and insights from 253 teachers, principals, and students, they analyze the data using SEM, HLM, GCM, and other statistical techniques.
