This timely work describes how localized hospital-based health technology assessment (HB-HTA) complements traditional HTA efforts and highlights the global impact of HB-HTA. Despite its recent momentum, expertise and information regarding HB-HTA have been scattered. This book consolidates essential information for those involved in HTA at various levels—hospital, regional, national, or global—and aims to support decision-makers and policymakers in evaluating the adoption and discontinuation of health technologies in hospitals. Traditionally, HTA has been conducted at the National/Regional level by agencies linked to governments, while hospitals serve as the primary entry point for most health technologies (HTs). Hospital decision-makers face numerous high-stakes investment and disinvestment decisions annually, often lacking adequate information. This gap arises because relevant HTA reports may not be available when new technologies are introduced, or existing reports may not meet the specific informational needs of hospital decision-makers. Consequently, there is a growing trend toward establishing hospital-based HTA units and programs. These initiatives provide vital and relevant evidence tailored to the hospital context and decision-making timelines, complementing the work of National/Regional HTA Agencies.
