The double burden of diseases, which includes both communicable and non-communicable diseases, presents significant challenges for rural communities in Nigeria. Historically, communicable diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS were the primary health threats. However, there has been a notable rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and heart disease. This dual burden complicates medical, psychological, and economic aspects for patients, families, healthcare providers, and public health systems. While prior research has examined age, sex-specific burdens, and risk factors related to NCDs, there is a lack of studies focusing on patients' perceptions and experiences in rural settings. This qualitative study investigates whether adult patients with type 2 diabetes in rural Nigeria perceive or experience this double burden and how they manage it. Conducted in Obowo L.G.A, Imo State, the research involved semi-structured interviews with nine participants aged 18 and older. Using grounded theory and Strauss and Corbin's framework, the interviews were conducted in Igbo and later transcribed into English. Data analysis revealed five key themes, highlighting practices that require attention, such as symptom perception, health-seeking behaviors, and coping strategies.
