This catalogue presents a selection of photography from the Olbricht Collection, which has the theme of transience as one of its focuses. Lending the moment permanence is an attribute of the medium per se. For the human being, the moment is the only perceptible part of eternity. Photography only appears to duplicate reality. From documentation to self reflection, it enables insights into the conditionality of human life and society in different epochs. The catalogue establishes connections between the iconic work in the collection, such as that by William Eggleston, August Sander and the contemporary positions of Cindy Sherman, Juergen Teller or Wolfgang Tillmans – complementing them with paintings and graphic art that corroborate this “moment of transience”.
