The significance of research data today and in the future is widely acknowledged both in Germany and internationally. Ensuring that research data remain accessible, shareable, and reusable over time is becoming a crucial responsibility for researchers and research infrastructure institutions. Key reasons for this trend include the validation of documented research data, their potential to inspire new research questions, the opportunity for re-analysis using innovative digital methods, and their applicability across various disciplines. Consequently, effective curation of research data is essential to maintain their accessibility and interpretability over time. In 2012, a baseline study assessed the situation across eleven research disciplines in Germany, with results published in a German-language edition. To reach an international audience, this edition has been translated and abridged. This publication summarizes the preconditions, findings, and conclusions of the baseline study on the long-term archiving of research data. The editors aim for this work to foster further discussion and raise awareness, ultimately leading to enhanced measures for the digital curation of research data.
