An International Conference on "Therapeutic, Psychological and Research Aspects of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis" took place in Varese, Italy, from March 27 to 31, 1985, gathering healthcare professionals, scientists, patients, and families from twenty countries. The conference aimed to provide a platform for various ALS research paths, correlate regional therapies to create a common guide for patients and families, and encourage healthcare professionals to reflect on the psychological barriers associated with a terminal illness lacking a known cause or cure. The book is organized into six sections: Basic Research Aspects, Diagnostic Tools, Clinical Management, Therapeutic Trials, Psychological Aspects, and Epidemiology of ALS. Although certain topics, like pathological studies and animal models, were not covered in depth, they were discussed informally. The extensive number of papers presented reflects the increasing interest in ALS and the overall success of the Varese meeting.
