Captain Hector Servadac quarrels with the Russian Count Wassili Timascheff to win the favor of a young widow and arrange a duel. On the evening before the duel he is transferred by a mighty force to an apparent island, which is geographically located in a completely different place. They also meet other people who have suffered the same fate, such as Count Vasily Timascheff. Little by little it turns out that they are on a comet that has taken several earthly rocks with it in a collision with the earth. To leave the comet again, a race against time begins.
