Loess materials significantly influence environmental and climatological factors and are crucial for productive agriculture across various continents. Some of the world's most fertile agricultural lands are found in loess regions, particularly in Europe and China. However, these areas are highly susceptible to soil erosion and slope failures, such as mudflows and landslides. The workshop “Loess Geomorphological Processes and Hazards” focused on the eolian dust cycle involving erosion, transport, and deposition, as well as water erosion and control of loess layers. This volume presents case studies from various loess regions, including the prominent Yellow River basin and its Loess Plateau. Key topics include the sources of loess material and the formation of the Loess Plateau in China (by Zhang Linyuan, Dai Xuerong & Shi Zhengtao), erosional processes like splash detachment (by G. Govers), and transport and deposition of eolian dust from deserts in China and Africa (by K. Inoue & T. Naruse, A. Rapp & T. Nihlen, T. Littmann, K. Rogner & W. Smykatz-Kloss). Additional discussions cover deformation mechanisms of loess material (by Miao Tiande & Wang Zhenggui), comparisons of landforms (by S. Yokoyama, Y. Matsukura & T. Suzuki), and landslides in China's loess district (by E. Derbyshire et al.).
