This volume originates from an Autumn School on "Analysis of Climate Variability - Applications of Statistical Techniques" held on Elba in November 1993. It includes lectures focused on the application of statistical methods in climate science, as general descriptions of these methods are already well-documented. The emphasis is on practical applications, showcasing examples of observed data analysis and model result evaluations (Parts I and II). Additionally, various pattern analysis techniques are discussed (Part III), including teleconnections, EOF, SSA, CCA, and POP, which are essential tools for climate researchers. It is crucial for graduate students to be introduced to these methods early in their studies in a clear and concise manner. A short subject index is provided at the end to help readers locate specific topics, highlighting pages where discussions are more extensive rather than attempting to reference every occurrence. The Autumn School was part of the European Programme on Climatology and Natural Hazards (EPOCH) training activities and continued under the ENVIRONMENT 1990-1994 research program, targeting graduate students in their first and second years.
