Born in London, England, he was the third and youngest of the three sons of Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917) and Marie Perugia (1862-1937). A scion of the prominent Rothschild banking family of England, he was educated at Harrow School and the University of Cambridge where he secured a Double First in history.
