This extensively illustrated book examines how science fiction has served as a human response to science, exploring a spectrum of reactions from complacency to exhilaration, and hope to terror. Featuring essays by experts and interviews with notable science-fiction authors, the book includes reproductions of classic ephemera, graphics, and objects. It delves into the darker aspects of the genre—anxieties, fears, dystopias, monsters, and apocalypses that have long characterized science fiction. Ultimately, it poses fundamental questions about humanity and the future, particularly relevant in today's context of climate emergencies, the coronavirus pandemic, and advancements in military technologies. This publication is timely for contemporary readers grappling with these global challenges. An exhibition related to this work was held at the Science Museum in London from October 6, 2022, to May 4, 2023.
