More than a travel guide, this graphic novel offers a vibrant glimpse into a unique place and time in Japan. Artist Florent Chavouet, having only visited two islands before, embarks on a summer journey to the small island of Manabeshima, located in the Inland Sea near Osaka. With a population of just 300, he dedicates himself to documenting the island’s inhabitants and their stories in his sketchbook. Unlike his previous work, which focused on the urban landscape of Tokyo, this narrative centers on the local characters who embody the island's spirit. Through Chavouet's sensitive illustrations and insightful captions, he brings to life a diverse cast, including Ikkyu-san, the bar owner, and his three quirky regulars; the Nakamura family with their five children; Shimura-san, a relic of the 1970s; Kurata-san, the policeman; and Reizo-san, the island's intellectual.
