Captain Edward Brazier is headed to Deal to propose marriage to Betsey Langridge. But between Betsy's brother prohibiting the match, and Brazier marked out for trouble by a local smuggling gang, his plans are in disarray. When it emerges that there may have been an old injustice closer to home, he is caught up in more than he'd bargained for.
