Reformation Revisited

Más información sobre el libro

How much of the Reformation remains in its region of origin, known as Luther Country? It has shaped the early modern world because of the impact of Luther's teachings, and Wittenberg, Eisleben and the Wartburg Castle have become symbolic places. But there are also many other towns and landscapes in the old state of Saxony which reflect the outcome of his ninety-five theses and the subsequent division of western Christianity. The art historian and journalist Günter Kowa and the photographer Henning Kreitel have travelled this heartland of Protestantism. In his own elegant translation of his German book, published in 2017, Kowa brings historic events to life and shows what record there is of them in buildings and towns. He explores how they have changed over time and debunks some of the myths that surround them. Kreitel looks for the aura of places with an eye for unusual detail and a sense of atmosphere. In this way the book offers unique insights for the tourist as well as giving a lively account of the history of those turbulent times.
