‘And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.’ (Revelations 5:5) The Seven Plagues of Seven Angels is Cedar Lewisohn’s second project for Slimvolume, following The Marduk Prophecy (2020). The title references the Book of Revelation, presenting a contemporary allegory of pandemics, environmental disasters, nuclear threats, and multi-faceted apocalypse. Lewisohn is captivated by the Bible’s surreal imagery, translating it into a wordless comic book using handmade woodcuts and lino prints. The work, depicted in red and white—colors of protest—features bizarre representations that blur the line between human and otherworldly beings, connecting with modern culture and identity through depictions of psychosis in London. The book also resonates with reggae music and themes of captivity and rebellion against corrupt power structures, echoing the fall of Babylon. Notably, reggae tracks like Culture’s ‘Two Seven’s Clash’ reflect similar themes, with historical ties to Marcus Garvey’s predictions. The Book of Revelation’s origins in Aramaic and its global influence parallel Rastafarian culture’s messianic elements and the ongoing discourse around displacement and liberation. In a politically charged era, this artist’s book underscores the enduring quest for the fall of Babylon.
